2017 Convention Report
The annual fundraiser for National Women's Ministries takes place in February every year. This year a mailing went out to the Churches emphasizing the National Projects and needs. For the month of February, the churches put out the "Cup of Blessing" and a bulletin insert was provided encouraging congregational participation. I would like to see greater participation from ALL the churches. The women were reminded about our National Projects, and were encouraged to keep up to date on what's happening in our region and others by going to the website.
The Biennial conference was held in Phoenix, Arizona on March 24-26, 2017. I attended as a delegate from Immanuel Lutheran Church in Pasadena, CA. The meeting was well attended and the Spirit of God was present in all the sessions and fellowship during the weekend. Dr. Eugene Boe spent Friday teaching us the history of Martin Luther and our rich biblical history.
On Sunday the 26th in the afternoon, Ruth Vallevik and I traveled to the Yuma Church to attend a women's tea there. Ruth spoke to the women about living a Christian life as believers in Jesus Christ. It was powerful to meditate on living a purposeful, intentional, prayerful, peace-making life. There was about 20 women who attended the tea and they were also blessed.
The annual Ladies' Retreat for the Pacific Region took place in Murrieta, CA on March 31 through April 2nd. Our theme was Sweet Life Cafe' which was from a kit purchased by our Region, and planned by the PRS BOD. The sessions throughout the weekend were led by women from the various churches in attendance. The study utilized knowledge throughout the Bible. We learned from one another in small groups as we shared our experiences and gathered knowledge from each other. We had planned on 30 women but God had other plans and 49 women came to retreat!
In addition, we were blessed to have 6 pastors wives in attendance at the retreat. We honored them with a "pastors wives tea" on Saturday afternoon. Their session was led by our own Director of Women's Ministry, Ruth Vallevik. Ruth also led our Sunday morning worship service concluding our retreat time. The women were blessed as she shared her testimony and how she was supported by the promises of God through his Word during each and every milestone in her life.
Next year we have a committee to plan the retreat alongside of the BOD. We are hoping to do a combination of speaker and 'retreat in a box', blending both forms of learning together, helping women build a solid life in Christ.
This year we looked for different ways to enhance the "silent auction" in an effort to generate more sales as the matching fund from Thrivent is no longer available. We encouraged 'home-made' items for the sale. We obtained $750.00 from Thrivent for retreat expenses that allowed us to keep the retreat cost to the ladies stable again this year. We are thankful for God's provision to our region.
The annual business meeting for PRSWM was April 1, 2017. Mary Vojtko agreed to run for Vice President for another term. Mariann Vetrhus also agreed to accept a 2-year term as Secretary.
Several of the churches in the PRSW are struggling. The needs vary and the discouragement of the saints is, and should be, a concern for all of us. Please join me in praying for God's will to be done in and through each group that are going through trials.
