The Sixties “The best way to get women praying for their missionaries is to have them get to know them,” was one of the thoughts behind a series of “Handbooks” produced by the women of the sixties. Volunteers typed, duplicated, and assembled three thick volumes during this decade. The Handbooks were great reading! They contained short autobiographies written by many missionaries and synod leaders, or biographies by their children, based on questionnaires distributed by WMF. A “testimony” section contained testimonies from WMF women throughout the U.S. and Canada. Local groups shared “Unique Programs” from their churches and a cornucopia of “project ideas” – from rolling bandages for Africa, to making lap robes for nursing home residents, to knitting “soakers” to cover baby diapers at the Wakpala Indian Mission. A “Linen room” was established to supply needs of missionaries through hand-sewn quilts and other generously donated items. Women of the Sixties gave liberally to many joint projects such as the direct support of several single women missionaries, the education of missionary children, and the ongoing support for radio broadcasts in Japan with Pastor Kosukegawa speaking, reaching hundreds of thousands of people. They provided support for Linda Dalene, a parish worker who worked with several Home Mission congregations, began a revolving fund for needs of Home Mission churches, provided dorm furniture for the new Sletta-Strom Bible dormitory, and equipment for the synod offices and publishing house. Local groups, besides giving service to their own congregations, stretched their giving by tackling enormous projects such as the reprinting of My Experience with the Bandits by China missionary, Juline Kilen, and filing and alphabetizing all of the words in the Fulani New Testament to assist Missionary Leslie Stennes in compiling a Fulani concordance. |
