To What Do We Pledge Our Allegiance?
by Cheryl Johnson

As we enter into the month of July, I think most, if not all, of us are planning to celebrate Independence Day on the 4th of July. This year will be a very special celebration in our family as our son-in-law Hari pledges his allegiance to the United States of America. He is from the Philippines, and will become a U.S. citizen on July 4th. We are excited for him!
I was reflecting on the meaning of the word pledge, and found that it is a solemn promise or vow, a commitment to something. By pledging your allegiance, you are making a promise to show devotion or loyalty to a person, group, or cause. The number one question asked of those applying to become U.S. citizens, is what it means to them to do this. They are expected to answer that it is a promise (or pledge) to be loyal to the United States.
Remember when we all used to say the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of the school day? Did you know that there is also a Pledge of Allegiance to the Christian flag? If you are not familiar with it, it goes like this:
“I pledge allegiance to the Christian flag, and to the Savior for whose Kingdom it stands; one brotherhood, uniting all mankind in service and in love.”
In essence, with that pledge we are promising to be loyal to and live for Christ. Do we actually live out this promise? Do we serve others as Christ did, and show others Christ’s love? Let us truly take our pledge seriously and unite as one with Christ, undivided, and standing up for what we believe in. Let’s celebrate our freedom in Christ!
