Down from the Mountain

This summer my husband and I traveled to Norway and Sweden. Since we were there three years ago, he wanted to go back and find his family homes in Norway. He did his research, contacted his mom’s cousin and we made our plans. What a wonderful trip! Three of his grandparents were born in Norway, and he found the birthplaces of all of them. What a joy to find that the second cousins we met are all Christians! It was a great vacation. The weather was delightful, we were treated like long lost family (which we are!), and the sightseeing was gorgeous! We saw much of the beautiful scenery from tops of hills and mountains. Despite the jet lag that comes with international travel, it was a mountain-top kind of experience.
So what happens when we get home? Peter, after the wonder of the transfiguration of Jesus, wanted to pitch tents and stay up there with the famous prophets of old (Matthew 17). Jesus didn't even respond to his suggestion. Instead God speaks from heaven and says “listen to my Son” (v.5). God was redirecting them to hear what Jesus was going to tell them regarding his future death and resurrection. That news was certainly “in the valley of the shadow”, when they began to understand it.
One of George’s grandmothers was born and lived as a girl in a very deep valley. It was beautiful in June, but imagining the lack of sunlight in the winter was sobering. The shadows would have been everywhere. How did they survive?
We all have some valleys to face when we get down from the mountains. We wanted to avoid the realities of life and escape to Norway! But the Lord knows we really live in the valley and the plains. The mountain top moments are a special time He gives to us as an encouragement. Lots of sheep in Norway reminded me of Psalm 23. In the valleys He gives us Himself as the shepherd to lead us, green pastures and still waters to sustain and restore us. He also promises His presence and goodness and mercy no matter what happens in our deepest valley.
What wonderful promises! We can also look forward to eternal mountain tops with the Lord and all of His people.
We continue to add to our website by including some of our past devotionals - this month: one by Rachel Patterson from 2007
